Out of the many, many things there are to like about alt-J, my favorite may be that they don’t sound like any other band I can name. They produce songs that are both catchy and musically creative, all the while being utterly original.
This song is the second single from their upcoming third album, RELAXER, now set for release on June 2. The first two singles are so solid, the release date has been pushed up a week — and deservedly so. This song has a killer chorus that I haven’t been able to get out of my head since I first heard it and I love how it grows in sound when the chorus gets repeated. Throw in an intense horn section and key change at the end and I’m hooked.
Excuse me for quoting Jackie O, but there’s a reason she’s a style icon. Pearl embellishments are all over the place at the moment, but these aren’t your grandmother’s pearls. They can be ladylike or even a little bit tough, almost replacing studs as a cool girl go to detail. My favorite version of the trend is pearl detailing on shoes whether it be sandals, loafers, boots, or even sneakers.Follow the links above to shop my favorite shoes with pearl embellishing!

My practicality almost got the best of me when I bought these boots, telling me that I would wear them much more if they were black. Then I remembered that most of the items in my closet are neutrals anyway so why not get them in blue, the color I really loved. I was obsessed with this Topshop skirt immediately. Embroidered denim is everywhere at the moment and this skirt is the perfect balance of tough and sweet. It sold out pretty quickly, but click the links below to shop similar looks!
I just had my mind blown when I realized that Spoon’s debut album was released when I was four years old. I started listening to them in high school as ‘The Underdog’, an instant classic, was inescapable at the time. Since then, they’ve released eight more albums, including their most recent, Hot Thoughts.
Spoon songs have always been sing-alongs, filled with punchy guitar riffs and percussion, but have pretty much stayed under the indie pop umbrella. With Hot Thoughts, they tiptoe into electronica and even disco. The title track above opens with echoing synths that begin to weave organically with the percussion and guitar lines. This album has a solid groove to it that I caught only faintly in the past from the band and I’m loving it.
I’m still obsessing over embroidery as much as everyone else is at the moment and this BLANKNYC Moto Jacket is such a cool iteration of the trend. The weather may not reflect it here in NYC yet, but I’m ready for warmer weather and this Reformation linen dress screams summer to me. I’ve written about my love for beaded tassel earrings before and I actually bought these in red while I was writing this post, as Baublebar has a great promotion going on right now. I love the tomboyish 70’s vibe of these Madewell jean shorts and I’m really into graphic tees with a feminist twist right now.

My wardrobe mostly consists of monochromatic basics. You would assume that this would make shopping a breeze, but it somehow makes it even harder. My favorite basics have special details that set them apart from the hundreds of other pieces just like them. This grey cable-knit sweater is beautiful because of the mismatched patchwork of knits and these white sneakers are special because of their stud-like leather straps. First thing’s first: Jillian Hervey, lead singer of the NYC music duo Lion Babe, has the most amazing hair you will ever see. I always thought I had thick hair, but this is another level. It’s no wonder the daughter of Vanessa Williams is a Pantene ambassador.
Now that that’s out of the way, Lion Babe makes genre-crossing, soulful, vintage-influenced music. Despite moving from smooth R&B (see ‘Treat Me Like Fire’) to neo-disco (‘Where Do We Go;) to soul with a hip-hop influence on the above track, ‘Jump Hi’, every different genre has the same uplifting force pulsing behind it…and this is all on their first album. I love that most of their music videos are shot in and around NYC as well, as their music is just as eclectic as the city itself.

For a while now I’ve been a fan of geometric detailing when it comes to design, especially when it comes to a big geometric-print rug being the focal point of an otherwise minimally decorated room. Circles have been somewhat neglected when it comes to that love for geometry in design until now.
A circular mirror in a modern room feels kind of retro and adds a timeless look to the space. I love a big circular mirror in an entryway above a long, low bench or table as well as in a bathroom to create a playful vibe.
It looks fresh in a mostly white room and works so well when paired with a colorful rug. I would probably look for a circular mirror with a dark edge or frame to highlight the geometric design and make it more of a statement piece.
Lace-up detailing and embellishments are all over the place right now, but one of my current favorite versions of this trend is pants with lace-up detailing. I’ve seen it on denim and leather pants alike either as a detail on the front panel of the pants, ankle, or even all the way up the leg.
